Student Fellow Tracy Boyer wins a first place Award of Excellence from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for Honduras and the Hidden Hunger

The "Best of the Web" competition is an annual Website design contest for members of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication. There are categories for individual, group and creative entries. Judging will be done by Web design professionals and academics with a background in Web technology.

The Livingston Awards for excellence by professionals under the age of 35 are the largest all-media, general reporting prizes in American journalism. They are also unusual in judging print, broadcast and online entries against one another, a practice of increasing interest as technology blurs traditional distinctions between rival branches of the profession.

The Overseas Press Club of America gave a citation to Elliott Woods' piece for the Virginia Quarterly Review "Hope's Coffin." He was cited for the The Madeline Dane Ross Award, which awards the best international reporting in the print medium showing a concern for the human condition. The award itself went to Abigail Haworth, "Forced to be Fat," Marie Claire.

The American Society of Journalists and Authors recently announced the winners of its annual writing awards. Wiltenburg won first place in the Profiles category for "Lost in Migration."

She also received a special citation from the Education Writers Association, which recently announced its 2009 winners for education reporting for "Little Bill Clinton: A Day in the Life of a New American."

Jen Marlowe has won the Crossroads Film Festival Award in the "Transformative Film" category for her documentary Rebuilding Hope. The winning films were screened at the film festival in Jackson, Mississippi from April 16-18th.

Pulitzer Center grantee Meredith May's piece for the San Francisco Chronicle, "Olga's Girls," is a finalist for the Harry Chapin Media Awards.

"Almost a billion people on the planet don't have access to clean drinking water. That's one in eight of us."

That's the message charity: water, a nonprofit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations, wants you to hear.

The Virginia Quarterly Review was awarded the National Magazine Award for Digital Media in the News Reporting category for Jason Motlagh's, "Sixty Hours of Terror" a four-part series covering the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The National Magazine Awards (known as the "Ellies") are presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors and the Journalism School at Columbia University. This is their first year to honor achievements in digital media.

Roberto (Bear) Guerra has been nominated for a National Magazine Award in the photojournalism category for "The Young Mothers of Port-au-Prince," by Ruxandra Guidi, featuring photographs by Guerra. The piece was published by the Virginia Quarterly Review.

Marco Vernaschi has won "Picture of the Year" and 1st prize in "Picture Story of the Year" in the Photographers Giving Back (PGB) Photo Award contest. Vernaschi's winning picture shows the chair on which the President of Guinea-Bissau, João Bernardo, was executed just a few hours previously.

Last fall, the American Society of Magazine Editors announced an expansion of the National Magazine Awards (known as the "Ellies") to encompass the burgeoning world of online journalism. The nominations for the Digital Ellies were announced today and we're excited to say we nabbed one!
