Pulitzer Center grantee and multimedia journalist Carl Gierstorfer won Germany's prestigious 2017 Grimme award for "Information and Culture." Similar to the Emmys awards in the United States, the Grimme awards recognize outstanding achievements in German television.

Gierstorfer's documentary follows one community’s fight for survival against Ebola through the eyes of Liberians on the frontlines battling to bring the outbreak to an end. The film follows four characters over the course of three months in their struggles against the disease.

Carl Gierstorfer is a journalist and filmmaker with a background in biology. He has produced and directed documentaries for ZDF, Discovery Channel and the BBC. As a videographer, he has reported from all corners of this world for Deutsche Welle, Germany's public international broadcaster.
