Grantee Sean Gallagher's short film Cambodia Burning was recognized at the Drone Photo Awards 2020, and received a “Highly Commended” title.

Cambodia Burning, part of the Pulitzer-supported reporting project of the same name, investigates how deforestation and forest fires are altering Cambodia’s landscape. The film fuses drone photography and poetry to explore the physical and emotional effects of environmental destruction. Logging and clearing land for agriculture have been accelerating deforestation across Cambodia. In 2018, fires burned in record numbers, more than in any other country in Southeast Asia.

Gallagher is an award-winning British photojournalist and long-time Pulitzer Center grantee. Based in Beijing, he specializes in covering global environmental issues.

The Drone Awards are a project of the Siena International Photo Awards, based in Siena, Italy. The global competition recognizes excellence in aerial photography and video. To view Gallagher’s work and the work of other awardees, visit the virtual exhibition.
