The Pulitzer Center is the recipient of a 2008 Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize for Excellence in International Education in Media/Technology presented by the Asia Society. We are honored by this recognition of our Global Gateway educational initiative where we connect students with under-reported international issues and the Pulitzer Center journalists covering them. Our Pulitzer Gateway online portals are an essential part of this work from the prototype Water Wars launched in the fall to India: Conflicts Within, which went live this winter.

The following is an excerpt of "Broken News: What went wrong, and how to make it right" an address delivered by Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer to Davidson College, February 2, 2009.

I was at a conference last Friday in New York where we talked, no surprise, about the search for new models that would make it possible to sustain independent, high-quality journalism.

One billion people do not have access to clean water. 4,000 children die from diarrhea each day. Water-borne diseases kill more people in East Africa than AIDS. These were only a few of the myriad of statistics thrown out into the audience last Thursday night.

New Models of Journalism Offer Promise for Future of Journalism

In this video by Frank Popper (who also created "Youth Voices on Iraq"), high school-aged students speak out against apathy amongst young people toward anything political.

On July 2nd, Pulitzer Center Associate Director Nathalie Applewhite presented to a group of high school students attending Georgetown University's intensive journalism workshop offered through their summer school program.

The following is an unpublished Op-Ed article written by Sarah Ryan, as part of a Global Gateway: Georgetown project to raise awareness and develop outreach strategies for global issues.

Tea. One of the simplest drinks to make. All you need is a tea bag, hot water and some sugar. It takes a lot more effort to make the tea however, than to enjoy it. An effort which for some people means life or death.

Journalist Antigone Barton participated at the "Mobilizing and Engaging Communities for Global Health" conference at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Barton joined other experts to discuss policy initiatives such as PEPFAR, the relationship between education and health and the media's role in raising awareness of global epidemics.
