Failed and failing states threaten their own people and the world beyond, but with journalism in profound transition reporting on them is more challenging than ever. Two leading journalists discuss how to get these stories told.

Fred de Sam Lazaro is director of the Project for Under-Told Stories at Saint John's University, a program that combines international journalism and teaching. He has reported for PBS NewsHour since 1985 and is a regular contributor and substitute anchor for Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. Fred has reported from 35 countries, with a focus on topics that have gone under-reported in the U.S. media.

Jon Sawyer directs the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit that works with journalists, media outlets and educational institutions to support coverage of systemic global crises. The Center has worked with PBS NewsHour on multi-country reporting projects on food insecurity, water, and fragile states.
