The Pulitzer Center has announced its student fellows for 2011. In conjunction with its Campus Consortium member schools, the Pulitzer Center has selected four students to receive international reporting fellowships and the opportunity to work with Pulitzer Center staff on an international reporting project.
Hadas Gold is a graduate student at the George Washington School of Media and Public Affairs focusing on strategic communications. She will travel to Argentina this summer to report on how a government-run recycling program is threatening the livelihood of the cartoneros, thousands of poor who roam the streets collecting and selling recyclables for cash. Gold is a GW Presidential Scholar and was a finalist for the 2010 Associated College Press award for Best Feature Article.
At Davidson College, this year's student fellows are Coleen Jose and Anna Van Hollen, both juniors majoring in history. As part of the Davidson program, students will be mentored by Pulitzer Center grantees who will advise on the development of their reporting projects this summer.
Jose is paired with the former Washington Post bureau chief for Baghdad and Cairo, Ellen Knickmeyer, who is reporting on the role of youth in the Arab world revolutions. Van Hollen is paired with James Whitlow Delano, a Japan-based photojournalist who investigated logging practices in Malaysia.
Julia Rendleman is a former graduate student from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. She will be reporting on the Jamaican government and the United Nations' push to create a more self-reliant agricultural economy for the island nation. She currently reports for the Houma Courier & Daily Comet in Houma, Louisiana.
