The Pulitzer Center is excited to announce its selection of four African journalists to participate in a collaborative reproductive health-reporting project.
The journalists were selected from over 100 applicants from more than 20 countries in Africa. Their experiences encompass legal, social and environmental approaches to reproductive health, decades of experience and many national and international reporting awards. They are: Mae Azango of Liberia, Estelle Ellis of South Africa, Sam Olukoya of Nigeria and Ken Opala of Kenya.
This collaboration will partner these four African journalists with Jina Moore, a three-time Pulitzer Center-grantee, four-time American Society of Journalists and Authors award winner, and recent Fulbright Fellow in Journalism. Pulitzer Center Visual Media Coordinator Jake Naughton will join Jina and the African journalists for reporting in the field early next year.
Together they will produce a body of reporting focused on reproductive health that will be distributed in African and international outlets. The aim of this collaboration is to improve the quality of reporting on reproductive health and bring the voices of African journalists working to communicate the systemic crises affecting their countries to an international audience.
A training workshop and project planning will be held in Dakar at the International Family Planning Conference in late November. The workshops will be conducted by Jina Moore and Jake Naughton as well as Pulitzer Center Managing Director Nathalie Applewhite and Alexis Okeowo, an editorial staff member of The New Yorker.
