“The 21st Century Goldrush,” a multimedia story by two Pulitzer Center grantees, Emily Kassie and Malia Politzer, took home this year’s Ellie award for multimedia journalism. The piece was published in The Huffington Post's Highline in 2016. The American Society of Magazine Editors hosts the annual Ellie Awards for categories ranging from feature writing and essays to photography, video and reporting.
“The 21st Century Goldrush” details the economic sway the greatest migration in record history is having on the world economy through four key locations across the globe: Niger, Italy, Turkey and Berlin, Germany.
Through interactive maps, video, and photography, Politzer and Kassie capture what it’s like for not only migrants caught in the economic whirlwind of their journey, but of the people who perpetuate that journey as well. From pimps and indentured prostitutes to “passers” (those who facilitate migrants passing from one place to another), “The 21st Century Goldrush” offers a look at a nuanced issue in today’s migrant crisis.
