On Thursday, April 2, the Overseas Press Club announced the citation winners for the OPC Awards for work published in 2019.
The Pulitzer Center project for The Desert Sun, USA Today and Animal Politico, “Fleeing Violence, Mexicans Seek Asylum in the U.S.,” won a citation for the Madeline Dane Ross Award for international reporting in the print medium or digital showing a concern for the human condition. In their project, grantees Rebecca Plevin and Omar Ornelas report on the violence that compels Mexicans to flee Guerrero, one of the country's most violent states, and the struggles associated with gaining asylum in the United States.
