Pulitzer Center's 'Far from Over' Series Explores Challenges to 'Ending Aids'

June 2018 cover of Science magazine. Yusuf Adamu, a 12-year-old boy with an advanced case of AIDS, gets an x-ray at Asokoro District Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria. Although the world is getting closer to its goal of "ending AIDS," HIV still wreaks havoc in some places. Powerful antiretrovirals can thwart transmission and extend life span, but many infected people do not have the means to obtain these drugs, owing to poverty and other socioeconomic factors. In 2016, the Pulitzer Center supported "Ending AIDS," a multi-part series for PBS NewsHour, Science and BuzzFeed on efforts in the United States and across Africa to decrease the spread of HIV/AIDS, with the goal of ending AIDS. The project won a national Emmy and also the top broadcast journalism prize from the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering.

This week we launched "Far from Over," which details the challenges to ending the epidemic in Russia, Nigeria, and the state of Florida. Led by Jon Cohen,  who has covered the HIV/AIDS epidemic for 30 years, the series includes a 16-page cover story in print for Science and a five-part series on PBS NewsHour, produced by William Brangham and Jason Cane. Photographer Misha Friedman's images are featured in the reporting and will be exhibited as part of the the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) in Amsterdam in late July.
