Donate NowThe Institute of Politics at University of Chicago in partnership with the Pulitzer Center welcomed author and journalist Scott Anderson to discuss his landmark Pulitzer Center-supported reporting in The New York Times Magazine, "Fractured Lands," which provides one of the most comprehensive accounts of the unraveling of the contemporary Arab World.
Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer joined Anderson and Kerry Luft, former foreign editor of the Chicago Tribune, moderated the discussion before a standing-room only audience of more than 125.
"Fractured Lands" traces the lives of individuals across the Middle East who lived through autocratic rule, the invasion of Iraq, the turmoil of the Arab Spring, the rise of ISIS and more. Months of reporting culminated with Anderson's 42,000-word story, the searing black-and-white photography of Paolo Pellegrin and links online to Ben Solomon's virtual reality video on the retaking of Fallujah.
The Pulitzer Center-New York Times Magazine collaboration on “Fractured Lands” was a direct result of the Center’s Catalyst Fund, a $1 million initiative aimed at fostering strategic relationships with major news outlets in support of multimedia reporting. The initiative began with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Kendeda Fund, and individual donors to the Pulitzer Center.
