"Globally almost 3 billion people, half the world’s population, cook over wood, charcoal, and dung. Firewood has been used as a fuel for heating and cooking since the beginning of mankind. According to the WHO, however, the exposure to the resulting household air pollution kills over 4 million people a year—one person every 8 seconds."

Photographs from Nathalie Bertrams and Ingrid Gercama's project about the dangeres of cooking in Malawi will be featured on the Pulitzer Center Instagram from August 7-16, 2017.
