Society of Environmental Journalists co-founder Bud Ward praised the new Campus Consortium partnership between the Pulitzer Center and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communications as a way to nurture reporting on climate change and fill information gaps left by the decline of traditional newsrooms.

"It’s part of an ongoing effort to nurture top-notch reporting on climate change, which we see as one of the most important stories of the 21st century," Ward told SEJournal Online in an article published on November 8, 2016. "It’s also a logical evolution in our effort to build partnerships with leading media interests addressing climate change, energy and related issues through what we call “evidence-based journalism”—the kind of extensive public opinion research and survey work that my colleague Anthony Leiserowitz of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communications, and his fellow researcher Ed Maibach of George Mason University, have done to better understand public understanding of and interest in climate-related issues."

Ward said there was a continuing need to establish partnerships between universities and independent journalism organizations "to help fill the news and information voids left by the decline of traditional newsrooms, which face financial challenges from declining advertising revenues, and competition from online information sources, among other things." Ward established Yale Climate Connections, a program of Yale University’s School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, nine years ago.

To launch the new Campus Consortium partnership, Pulitzer Center grantee Eli Kintisch visits Yale on December 1, 2016. Kintisch is an award-winning correspondent for Science Magazine whose reporting on climate change and the Arctic has been supported by the Pulitzer Center.
