Grantees Melissa Noel and Janelle Richards are among the finalists for NABJ's 2018 Salute to Excellence award.
Noel's NBC BLK story, "Jamaica's 'Barrel Children' Often Come up Empty with a Parent Abroad," was selected as a finalist in the "Digital Media Single Story: Feature" category. This reporting is part of her Pulitzer Center-funded reporting project on migration's emotional and psychological impact on the Caribbean children left behind by their parents.
Richards' reporting on NBC News, "Kenyan Entrepreneurs Help Youth Thrive in Africa's Emerging 'Silicon Valley'," is among three finalists in the "Digital Media Single Story: News" category. She travelled to Kenya with Pulitzer Center funding to examine the challenges women face in the technology sector.
Both Noel and Richards' reporting is among four projects that received funding as a result of the Pulitzer Center's NABJ 2017 outreach. Both grantees will be on the "Covering International Affairs" panel at NABJ's 2018 convention in Detroit.
