Domestic Violence in Russia

Nick Schifrin and Zach Fannin

Grantees Nick Schifrin and Zach Fannin, in a story for the PBS NewsHour, report that nearly one in five women in Russia has experienced domestic abuse, and more than 14,000 die each year at the hands of violent spouses or boyfriends. This is 20 times the rate in the U.S. A new law in 2016 offered more protection to victims, but it was effectively gutted earlier this year when the Russian Orthodox Church and others complained that it encouraged “state meddling in family matters” and substituted “Western values” for Russian ones.
