Donate NowFounded in 1861 in what is now downtown Seattle, the University of Washington is one of the oldest public universities on the West Coast and contains 16 schools and colleges. More than 43,000 students were enrolled in 2013. The Department of Global Health and Department of Communication jointly support the University's partnership with the Pulitzer Center, which will include two student fellows per year.
The Department of Global Health, established in 2007 through a generous gift by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the state Legislature and the University, is looking at global health solutions through a broad lens by involving all U.W. schools and colleges and numerous partners around the world. The Department is housed in both the schools of Medicine and Public Health and is the second biggest department in terms of funding. Focuses within the department from undergraduate through Ph.D. programs include health metrics and evaluation, infectious diseases, climate change, global trauma and violence, global medicines safety, women, children and adolescent health, and a strong cross-cutting focus on social justice and equity.
The Department of Communication provides professional BA, MA and Ph.D. programs in communications and journalism. The mission of the journalism program is to help students develop strong analytical and communication skills for careers in digital and traditional media, and instill in students the entrepreneurial spirit required to succeed in todayʼs media environment. The department also is connected to several research centers, including the University's Center for Communication and Civic Engagement, which is dedicated to understanding dynamic media systems in order to promote citizen engagement and effective participation in local, national, and global affairs.
