The Pulitzer Center is partnering with Helium to get your voice heard on important global issues often under-reported in US media. The winning essay will be showcased on our website, and the winner will receive a Pulitzer Center Global Issues/Citizen Voices Award.

When selecting the winner from the top ranked entries on Helium, the Pulitzer Center values vivid, well-articulated essays that reflect insight, a clear point of view and, where appropriate, original reporting. Anything fictionalized or not based on the writer's own observations should be clearly marked.

Global Maternal Health Writing Contest

In June 2010, the Pulitzer Center again partnered with Helium to produce the Global Issues/Citizen Voices Writing Contest. In this round, contestants were challenged with the following prompt:

Hundreds of thousands of women die each year due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. What are the first steps to making a difference?

World Water Day Writing Contest

In March 2010, the Pulitzer Center again partnered with Helium to produce the Global Issues/Citizen Voices Writing contest. In this round, contestants were challenged to craft essays related to international water issues with the following prompt:

Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation claims 4,500 lives a day. What should we do about it?

Round seven: Winning essays

In July 2009, the Pulitzer Center again partnered with Helium to produce round seven of the Global Issues/Citizen Voices Writing Contests. Contestents chose from writing prompts and crafted essays regarding the most pressing international issues of the day.
