Meet the Journalist: Emily Gogolak

In this project, journalist Emily Gogolak documents the stories of women and children deported from immigration detention centers in Texas, focusing on Hondurans. Violent deaths among women in Honduras rose by more than 263 percent between 2005 and 2013. The impunity rate for femicide and sexual violence claims is about 95 percent. Gogolak reports on life inside family immigration detention centers, the realities of the deported, and the context of violence that forced them to flee and to which they return. She explores what’s causing the crisis of violence against women in Honduras and the effects of deterrence in the U.S. immigration policy.
