Meet the Journalist: Jeffrey Stern

Author and photographer Jeffrey E. Stern explains his approach to reporting on the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe. Stern’s goal is to collapse the distance between readers and the war in Yemen, and to try to render a massive humanitarian crisis on a small, personal scale. While Yemen has been and remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, it has received a disproportionally small amount of media attention. Aside from a surge of interest related to Saudi Arabia’s role in Yemen in the wake of revelations about the Saudi government-orchestrated murder of American resident Jamal Khashoggi, Yemen has not been a crisis Westerners cared about, despite its magnitude. Stern explains how he accounted for the lack of interest and how he sought to address it.
