On Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5, "The Abominable Crime" screens in the Asterisco First International LGBTIQ Film Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Jamaica has the reputation of being one of the most violently anti-gay countries in the world. Jamaica's anti-buggery law, which refers to homosexuality as "an abominable crime," is a legacy of the island's British colonial past. Award-winning filmmaker and Pulitzer Center grantee Micah Fink spent four years investigating homophobia's impact on Jamaicans.
Central to the documentary, filmed in Jamaica, Canada and the Netherlands, are Simone Edwards and Maurice Tomlinson. Edwards is a single mother who survives an anti-gay shooting and decides to flee the country to seek asylum in the Netherlands for her and her daughter. Tomlinson is a human rights lawyer who left Jamaica after his marriage to another man is made public, but returns periodically to teach.
