Every year thousands of women leave the Philippines to work abroad, from France to the United Arab Emirates, as domestic workers. In her project "Who Takes Care of Nanny's Children", Pulitzer Center-supported journalist Ana Santos introduces us to these women who say goodbye to their families for years at a time in the hope of providing a better life for those they leave at home. This simple aspiration comes at a cost that cannot be translated into monetary terms.
Join us on Monday, November 10, when Santos discusses her examination of what feminized migration means for the women and their families. The talk is part of a two-day visit that Santos and Ann Peters, Pulitzer Center director of development and outreach, will make to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
Duquesne University and the Society of Professional Journalists campus chapter are co-sponsoring the event with the Pulitzer Center.
Santos, who is the Pulitzer Center's 2014 Persephone Miel fellow, is a print and online journalist whose work has been published in IRIN News, Rappler, Marie Claire (Philippines), among others. She has reported on HIV/AIDS, gender issues, sexual violence and reproductive health rights in Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, Israel, Papua New Guinea and her home country, the Philippines. Living in one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, Ana also writes about disaster preparedness and response and the many ways it is interconnected with reproductive health and population.
