Since 1973, the Helms Amendment has prohibited U.S. foreign assistance money from being used to pay for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is in danger. In recent years, strict policy interpretation by the Obama administration and misguided enforcement by USAID has created a massive reproductive health crisis in Kenya. About 125,000 Kenyan women die of unsafe abortions each year, and the maternal death rate from abortion in Kenya is more than twice the global average. What will happen under the Trump Administration?
Join in a conversation with Pulitzer Center grantee journalists, writer Laura Bassett and photographer Jake Naughton, who traveled to Kenya to interview the women and doctors affected by this crisis and to investigate the role of U.S. politics in the situation. They will speak on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health.
Bassett is a senior politics reporter for The Huffington Post, where she has covered women's health and rights for five years. She earned a master's degree from Georgetown University.
Naughton, an alumni of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, is a visual journalist working on stories about issues of identity and a frequent contributor to The New York Times among other media outlets. His work has been recognized and supported by the Magenta Foundation, American Photography and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
