On Saturday, April 14, 2018, join Pulitzer Center student fellow Pat Nabong for a screening in Chicago of her short documentary. The documentary stems from her Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project, The Psychological Toll of Duterte’s Drug War, covering the family trauma sparked by Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs.
Nabong will be on hand to discuss her reporting. Joining her will be Bro. Jun Santiago, a Redemptorist Missionary based in Baclaran Church Manila, who has assisted families of the victims of the “war on drugs” campaign in the Philippines. Much of his work revolves around documentary photography and focuses on social justice issues, like small-scale mining, human rights violations and major disasters for the past 10 years.
Since July 2016, thousands of suspected drug dealers and users have been slain in the Philippines. A major portion of these victims come from low-income communities. Nabong's multimedia project considers the drug war's psychological toll on families of those killed and witnesses to the violence as well as barriers to mental health services and efforts to address those obstacles.
Nabong is the 2017 fellow from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, one of the Pulitzer Center's Campus Consortium partners. She is a freelance visual journalist based in Chicago, where she earned her master's degree in journalism from Medill. Prior to starting her graduate studies, Nabong worked as a freelance multimedia journalist for online news sites in the Philippines.
The event is hosted by the Filipino American Human Rights Alliance (FAHRA-Chicago), Pilipino United for Progress (UniPro), and the Filipino American Grand Parents Association of Chicago (FAGPAC).
