On Wednesday, March 25 award-winning filmmaker Gary Marcuse screens the Pulitzer Center-supported documentary Searching for Sacred Mountain at American University along with his earlier work Waking the Green Tiger.

Following the films, Marcuse discusses with students and faculty in the international studies program about how China’s environmental crisis has shaped a trend of a traditionally secular state looking to religion to encourage what some governmental officials are calling “an ecological civilization.”

Searching for Sacred Mountain, a film Marcuse co-directed with Shi Lihong,, tells the story of Liu Jianqiang, an investigative environmental journalist and Beijing editor of ChinaDialogue who has recently converted to Buddhism.

Waking the Green Tiger tells the story of the birth of a grassroots campaign that managed to halt the construction of a massive dam on the upper Yangtze River in 2008. It is the winner of 2013 China Green Film Award, Brazilian Environmental Journalism Award and Grantham Prize 2012 Special Award for Merit for Environmental Journalism.
