Pulitzer Center grantee photographer Matt Black joins author Barbara Ehrenreich for a conversation in New York on Monday, December 7, on how to create work that challenges public engagement on issues surrounding poverty. Documentary photographer Susan Meiselas, a member of Magnum Photos, introduce the pair.
Black's project, "The Geography of Poverty," has taken him across the United States through 70 locations where at least 20% of the population lives below the poverty level. His project has been supported in part by Magnum Foundation's Emergency Fund, Ehrenreich's Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) and the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with MSNBC.
The evening event, organized by the Magnum Foundation and EHRP, is part of a programming series for an exhibition at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, "The Value of Food: Sustaining a Green Planet," open until April 3, 2016.
After the Black-Ehrenreich conversation, photographer Nina Berman and her Columbia School of Journalism students present their project about economic disparity in upper Manhattan, which was inspired by the installation associated with "The Value of Food." They have spent a month examining income disparity and rapid gentrification between 110th and 145th Streets, river to river.
