On Saturday, October 13, 2018, the Pulitzer Center leads a workshop at the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival in Washington, D.C., on the importance of fact-checking especially in terms of investigative journalism in this era of heated conversations about on "fact news" and filter bubbles.
The workshop, aimed at filmmakers, features Pulitzer Center senior producer Steve Sapienza, Poh Si Teng, senior commissioning producer for Witness, and Hilke Schellmann, New York University assistant journalism professor and a Pulitzer Center grantee.
Participants will learn how to strategically and efficiently fact-check their own biases and their own reporting, and use new tools that can help verify when and where an image was shot. In addition to developing a road map to fact-check their own work, filmmakers also will learn about investigative skills and tools that will benefit any reporting, and even facilitate distribution.
Sapienza is an Emmy award-winning news and documentary producer, who for over 20 years has shot and produced stories for broadcast television and online distribution, covering a wide range of human security stories around the world from HIV/AIDS to landmines that have appeared in outlets including PBS NewsHour, The New York Times, The Financial Times, NPR, and Al Jazeera.
Teng is an Emmy-nominated director and senior commissioning producer for Witness, flagship observational documentary strand of Al Jazeera English (International). Schellmann is an assistant professor of journalism at New York University, an Emmy-award winning investigative reporter and a Pulitzer Center grantee on the reporting project, "Outlawed in Pakistan."
The Double Exposure Festival, a project of the investigative news organization 100Reporters, runs from October 10-14, 2018 in various venues in Washington, D.C. , featuring film screenings, panel discussions, workshops and master classes. On Thursday, October 11, two affiliated Pulitzer Center short documentaries screen, We Became Fragments and How We Choose.
