On Thursday, November 19, 2020, at 4:30pm PST, join Gray Area, Mission Local, ZERO1, and the Pulitzer Center for a webinar discussion on how community members, artists, data scientists, and designers can work together to report on the news through creative methods.
Grantees Lydia Chávez and Molly Oleson will discuss their Pulitzer Center-supported project, How Do We Survive?, which examines the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Latinx and undocumented immigrants living in San Francisco’s Mission District. Appearing in the hyperlocal outlet Mission Local, their reporting combined multimedia components and illustrations to tell the neighborhood’s diverse stories. Many Mission residents faced the difficult decision of returning to work and risking infection or losing their income and government aid.
Chávez and Oleson will be joined by artist Ram Devineni, the creator of interactive social-activist comic books who will share his latest work, Priya’s Shakti. The artist-educator will present a behind-the-scenes preview of the next edition of the popular augmented reality comic book series, featuring India’s first female superhero who returns to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. Priya's Mask will be released as an augmented reality comic book and animated short film featuring the voices of popular Hollywood and Bollywood movie stars and actors on December 2, 2020.
Gray Area is a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to applying art and technology to create social and civic impact through education programming and public events. ZERO1 is a nonprofit arts organization that aims to address complex social issues by producing community-driven new media and digital art projects.
