"Dying to Breathe", a short documentary by photographer and grantee Sim Chi Yin, screens at the Stories That Matter event at the Objectifs School of Photography and Film in Singapore on Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

Chi Yin's National Geographic film is one of three short documentaries featured at the event. Her film intimately explores the life of former Chinese gold miner He Quangui and his struggle with silicosis. It reveals China’s true cost of gold and explores China’s mining culture and the dangers surrounding the profession.

Following the screening, Chi Yin participates on a panel with filmmaker Ed Kashi of "Syria's Loss Generation" to discuss the meta and micro narratives surrounding their works. Chi Yin and Kashi are both members of the VII Photo Agency.

Stories That Matter is a program that features documentaries, essays, and narratives that look into the societal and cultural aspects of the world. Sometimes critical, sometimes heartbreaking, these stories have themes and impacts that are universal despite their personal lens.
