On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 11:00am PST/2:00pm EST, join grantees Nadja Drost and Bruno Federico as they discuss their Pulitzer Center-supported project The Extra-Continentals, which documents the migrants who brave the Darien Gap, a critical but dangerous path through the jungles spanning the border of Colombia and Panama.
These migrants from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean converge on this lawless, roadless tract of land in an effort to make it north to the U.S. and Canada. Fleeing conflict, persecution, and poverty, many feel as if this hazardous trail is their only option as other migration routes become more difficult.
Based in New York City after a decade in Bogotá, Colombia, Drost regularly reports from Latin America as a special correspondent for PBS NewsHour. She received the 2017 Overseas Press Club of America’s award for Best Reporting on Latin America for her NewsHour coverage of FARC guerrillas in Colombia.
Federico is an Italian videographer, editor, and documentary filmmaker based in New York. He has produced, shot, and edited reports from various Latin American countries, working frequently with PBS NewsHour and CCTV America.
This webinar is the second in a series co-hosted with San Diego State University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) exploring migration and immigration to the United States, a theme particularly important to San Diego given its status as a major border crossing. JMS hopes this partnership will help highlight underreported stories of migration and related issues in an effort to create globally conscious citizens.
