Thursday, September 8, 2016 - 06:00pm to 09:00pm EDT (GMT -0400)

Please join us Thursday, September 8, 2016, for a reception and panel the Pulitzer Center is hosting on our collaboration with The New York Times Magazine on "Fractured Lands," the landmark edition of the magazine published August 14, 2016, that was devoted entirely to the work of Pulitzer Center grantees Scott Anderson, Paolo Pellegrin, and Ben C. Solomon.

The event begins with a reception at 6 pm in the Lecture Hall of the Columbia University School of Journalism. The 90-minute panel discussion begins at 6:30 pm followed by a concluding reception.

This unprecedented issue of The New York Times Magazine is the product of months of interviewing, filming, and photography tracing the lives of individuals across the Middle East as they lived through autocratic rule, the American invasion of Iraq, the turmoil of the Arab Spring, and the rise of ISIS and other militant groups. The reporting culminated with Anderson's 41,000-word story, the searing black-and-white imagery of Pellegrin, and links online to Ben Solomon's virtual-reality video on the retaking of Fallujah that he produced this summer while embedded with the Iraqi army.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Jon Sawyer, executive director of the Pulitzer Center. Anderson will be joined on the panel by Jake Silverstein, editor in chief of the magazine and Jenna Pirog, the virtual reality editor at the The New York Times Magazine. Discussion will focus on the substance of the reporting, the journalistic use of new techniques such as virtual reality, and The Times's commitment to making the magazine a platform for high-impact reporting. Fareed Mostoufi, the Pulitzer Center's senior education manager, will join the conversation to discuss how the Center is extending the reach of this work to students around the country.

Anderson has spent decades reporting from the region and is the author of Lawrence in the Middle East: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East, his acclaimed 2013 book on the fateful impact of T.E. Lawrence and his World War I contemporaries. Jenna Pirog has produced 6 VR films for the Times, most recently Ben Solomon's "The Fight for Falluja." She was part of the team that launched NYT VR in November 2015 and produced the Times's first virtual reality film, "The Displaced."

This event is co-listed with the Pulitzer Prizes Campfires, a series of public events around the country marking the Centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes and the impact of the prizes on American life.
