Photographer Matt Black visits Phillips Exeter Academy on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, to focus on "The Geography of Poverty," his multimedia reporting project on contemporary poverty and growing income inequality in the United States. Pulitzer Center Managing Director Nathalie Applewhite joins Black for the day-long visit that includes a lunch-time session at the Lamont Gallery.
After spending two decades focusing his lens on issues of poverty, migration and farming in California's Central Valley, Black expanded his project to the extreme economic hardship throughout the rest of the country. In summer 2015, Black embarked on a cross-country trip supported by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with MSNBC. He sought to explore and document the stories of individuals and communities from America's poorest regions through his photography.
"The Geography of Poverty" is a digital media project combining Black's geotagged photographs with census data to create a modern portrait of poverty in America. His journey to document poverty took him across the U.S and to communities where more than 20% of the population lives below the poverty line.
The Lamont Gallery event is co-sponsored with the Pulitzer Center and The Exonian, the student newspaper at Phillips Exeter Academy.
