With the U.S. economy in crisis due to the pandemic, many undocumented and Latinx immigrants living below the poverty line face the difficult decision of staying home and losing income or returning to work in restaurants, food delivery, or construction and risking infection.

On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at 4:00pm PDT/7:00pm EDT, join grantees Lydia Chávez and Sindya Bhanoo as they discuss their Pulitzer Center-supported project "How Do We Survive?," which documents these issues within San Francisco’s Mission District.

Chávez has been a Mission resident since 1998. She has served on the business, foreign, and city desks at The New York Times and has reported for other outlets including the Albuquerque Tribune, Lost Angeles Times, and Time magazine. Chávez is the founder and executive editor of Mission Local, a site covering local news in the Mission District since 2008. She was a professor at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism until the spring of 2019.

Bhanoo has worked as a reporter for The New York Times, where she was the longtime Observatory columnist, and The Washington Post, where she is still a frequent contributor. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley’s Graduate School of  Journalism and the Michener Center for Writers.

This online webinar is the first in the "Stories of Migration and Immigration" series, a collaboration between the Pulitzer Center and San Diego State University's School of Journalism and Media Studies. Upcoming conversations in the series will be announced at a later date.
