Join journalists James Whitlow Delano and Mellissa Fung as they explore the local costs of global goods, especially the impact on indigenous populations, as part of the University of Chicago's "The World Beyond the Headlines" series and its Campus Consortium partnership with the Pulitzer Center. Mark Lycett, director of the University of Chicago's Center for International Studies and Program on the Global Environment, moderates the conversation with Delano and Fung.

Delano is an award-winning photojournalist who received a Pulitzer Center grant to explore the Malaysian logging and palm oil industries and their effects on two groups of indigenous Malaysians: the Batek and the Penan. Delano uses black-and-white photography to tell the stories of these communities and explore the question of whether all alternative energy is good and green.

Fung traveled to Panama as part of her Pulitzer Center reporting grant to examine the effects of Canadian copper and gold mining in Nueva Lucha, a hamlet with a small population of indigenous Panamanians called the Ngobe-Bugle. They make their living extracting the precious metal deposits by sifting dirt with wooden pans. Because the Canadian mining companies' methods are more efficient, their presence in the region is quickly putting the Ngobe-Bugle out of business. Fung, an award-winning journalist, reported with Lynn Burgess, a documentary producer with the CBC Television’s flagship newscast The National. The project was a CBC/Pulitzer Center collaboration.
