Of China, WikiLeaks and South America: James Whitlow Delano at South Dakota State University

Award-winning photojournalist James Whitlow Delano will address “Chinese Soft Power, WikiLeaks, and a Small Amazonian Country” on Tuesday, February 19 on the campus of South Dakota State University. His lecture is open to the public.

As China seeks to gain influence in Latin America, the small Amazonian country of Suriname serves as an instructive geopolitical test case. Through its release of thousands of secret diplomatic documents, WikiLeaks opened a curtain on U.S. reactions to the expanding Chinese influence in and immigration to the Americas.

Delano has lived in Asia for 17 years. His work has won dozens of national and international awards, including the Alfred Eisenstadt Award, Leica’s Oskar Barnack Picture of the Year International, and has appeared in magazines and photo festivals on five continents.

This event is sponsored by the Pulitzer Center, and the Fillbrandt Forum of the SDSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in cooperation with the South Dakota World Affairs Council and SDSU Academic Affairs. SDSU is a Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium partner.
