Pulitzer Center grantee Emily Feldman spends three days at Campus Consortium partner Elon University to speak about her Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project, The Yazidis: After the Trauma. Her main talk is set for Monday, March 7, 2016.
Feldman has been covering the crises in Iraq and Syria for the past two years, specializing on the impact on women in those two countries. In northern Iraq, the Yazidis were massacred and enslaved by the Islamic State. Now they are displaced, smaller and more alone than they have been before.
Against this backdrop, Feldman reported on women who escaped from the Islamic State and were trying to adjust despite limited or no access to emotional or physical therapy in a tumultuous region. Her reporting took the story forward by telling how the Yazidi community took it upon itself, without support from a central government, to treat the survivors and secure the release of those still held captive.
