Pulitzer Center grantee Emily Feldman speaks at Campus Consortium partner University of Pennsylvania on Thursday, March, 17, 2016, about her Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project, "The Yazidis: After the Trauma."
Feldman has been covering the crises in Iraq and Syria, specializing on the impact on women in those two countries. In northern Iraq, the Yazidis were massacred and enslaved by the Islamic State. Now they are displaced, smaller and more alone than they have been before.
Against this backdrop, Feldman reported on women who escaped from the Islamic State and were trying to adjust despite limited or no access to emotional or physical therapy in a tumultuous region. Her reporting took the story forward by telling how the Yazidi community took it upon itself, without support from a central government, to treat the survivors and secure the release of those still held captive.
As part of the March 17 session, 2015 Pulitzer Center-University of Pennsylvania student fellows, Priya Ramchandra and Farzana Shah, also speak about their reporting projects in India and Iran. They along with Pulitzer Center Outreach Coordinator Lauren Shepherd answer students' questions about the fellowship experience and application process.
