The University of Maine hosts Pulitzer Prize winner and grantee Larry Price for a lecture and conversation at 5:30 PM on Thursday, April 14, 2016.
Price will be speaking about the photos he has taken dealing with human rights and labor in the developing world. His Pulitzer-supported projects both deal with gold mining—The Cost of Gold: Child Labor in Burkina Faso and Philippines and Indonesia: The Cost of Gold.
His projects look at the health effects that mining takes on the miners, especially the children, and the communities around the gold mines. Children often work rather than go to school, and they also work in dangerous environments, digging in mines that can collapse, working with mercury and inhaling toxins. Birth defects and long-term health problems have become almost commonplace in some mining communities.
Price's visit to University of Maine is a part of the Pulitzer Prize Centennial Campfire Initiative.
This event is free and open to the public.
