On Friday, May 4, 2018, join photographer Tomas van Houtryve for a talk moderated by Sally Katz of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This project is part of the CatchLight Fellowship, a partnership with the Pulitzer Center that awards grants to lens-based artists creating projects that bring awareness to challenging social issues and expand understanding of how visual art is used to communicate vital social issues.
Van Houtryve utilizes early 19th century photography techniques to capture landscape images of the original U.S.–Mexico border and descendents of early inhabitants. Using these methods and equipment it is possible to imagine what this unrecorded history might look like.
He explores the pre-1848 border between the United States and Mexico, when all of California and most of the far west was Mexican territory.
The artist talk with van Houtryve coincides with the exhibit, "FOCAL POINTS: CatchLight Fellows and Everyday Bay Area Collective." The exhibit features work from the 2017 CatchLight Fellows: van Houtryve, Sarah Blesener, and Brian L. Frank. Each fellow is paired with a different media partner.
