Join us at Westchester Community College on Wednesday, November 5, and Thursday, November 6, for the fall 2014 Frederick S. Beebe Chair for Journalism and the Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium presentations, "Migration & Education: Families in the Crosshairs."

Every year thousands of women leave the Philippines to work abroad, from France to the United Arab Emirates, as domestic workers (mostly nannies and cleaning women). In her reporting project "Who Takes Care of Nanny's Children", 2014 Pulitzer Center Persephone Miel Fellow Ana Santos, introduces us to these women who say goodbye to their families for years at a time in the hope of providing a better life for those they leave at home. This simple aspiration comes at a cost that cannot be translated into monetary terms.

Launched in October 2010 in a collaboration between the Pulitzer Center and Internews, the Persephone Miel fellowship supports an international journalist to report on a systemic global issue in his or her home country.

To escape poverty and social exclusion in their countries of origin, many Roma seek refuge in France. Often they face the same discrimination in their new home. Jalesa Tucker is the Pulitzer Center's 2014 Westchester Community College student fellow, whose reporting project is France: The Integration of Roma.

Now a student at the City College of New York majoring in communications, Tucker hopes her writing will capture the interconnectedness and human side of global issues including migrant struggles in the US and abroad.

Please join us for their presentations, with Question and Answer sessions to follow.
