On Monday, October 14, 2019, Leslie Tai's short documentary, "My American Surrogate," screens at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles, California at "An Evening with New York Times Op-Docs." Tai's film documents how a Chinese businesswoman in Southern California has become a matchmaker between Chinese parents and American wombs.

Her film screens at this International Documentary Association event alongside three other Op-Docs published by The New York Times. The other films being showcased profile an underdog fencer on the road to the Olympics, a storm chaser diagnosed with cancer, and a cautionary tale about the struggle between humans and poultry.

Tai is a Pulitzer Center-supported Chinese-American documentary filmmaker based in San Francisco whose award-winning work chronicles the dreams, anxieties, and consumer desire of China’s rising middle class, from a distinctly female perspective. Her documentary shorts have premiered worldwide at festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival, MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and Visions du Réel.
