Writing for the Associated Press, with the help of the Pulitzer Center, Galofaro has examined the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to promote opioids abroad.
From Australia to Italy to China, the message broadcast is reminiscent of the one blamed for sparking the U.S. opioid epidemic: opioids are touted as safe and appropriate for long-term chronic pain, and the risk of addiction is downplayed. Public health experts warn that the epidemic could quickly become a pandemic if the world does not learn the lesson of the American disaster and act quickly to contain it.
Galofaro is a national writer for the Associated Press, covering politics, poverty, and rural America. She has been documenting the spiraling opioid epidemic since 2015.
