Next Thursday, July 16, 2020, the Out of Eden Walk Project is kicking off a series of three weekly Zoom roundtables to discuss "walked storytelling." National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek is joined by journalists, photographers and activists for this first session.
Beginning in 2013, Salopek set out on foot from the Great Rift Valley in Ethiopia, tracing the path taken by the first modern humans out of Africa. The Pulitzer Center supports Salopek's project as the Out of Eden Walk's education partner, teaching students and educators how "slow journalism" and pilgrimage can be used as a backdrop for international news.
The occasion for the first webinar in the series is the publication of the next Out of Eden Walk article in National Geographic Magazine, "Water Everywhere, and Nowhere," based on Salopek's 2,400-mile trek through northern India — and across the troubled Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra watersheds. This first session will discuss craft – the challenges and rewards of covering such a vast, subcontinental story on foot. Two following chats will address the natural environment and the human landscape.
