Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lucian Perkins, an independent photographer and filmmaker, takes part in a discussion on identity as part of the inaugural Smithsonian "PhotoTalks" on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. Perkins discusses his Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project, " An Unexpected Sanctuary," and the story of a French town that has welcomed refugees for 400 years.

The event is a visual storytelling opportunity for photographers to showcase their work and chat with audience participants. This first session of "PhotoTalks" focuses on identity, the theme of the magazine's July/August 2018 photo package.

Photographers Erika P. Rodriguez and Wayne Martin Belger join Perkins for the conversation moderated by photojournalist Allison Shelley, who also is a Pulitzer Center grantee.
