Pulitzer Center Senior Editor Tom Hundley and journalist Ana Santos, the 2014 Persephone Miel Fellow, visit the Ateneo de Manila University on Monday, November 24 to present "Contentious Gender Issues in the Philippines: How the Media and the Catholic Church Have Shaped the Policy Debate."
Religion is central to the lives of billions, a guiding force that influences not only individual spiritual belief, but public policy as well. Hundley and Santos look at how religion and the media in the Philippines have defined the policy debate on gender issues including family planning, divorce, transnational families and the global hot-button issue of abortion. They have teamed up to report on these subjects before, including their recent article in The Washington Post on the Philippines as the last country in the world with a ban on divorce.
Hundley, a former foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, has written extensively on these subjects in the Philippines for The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and Foreign Policy magazine. Santos is a print and online journalist whose work has been published in IRIN News, Rappler, Marie Claire (Philippines), among others.
The discussion is hosted by The Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC) in partnership with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Development Studies Program, and the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism of the School of Social Sciences at Ateneo de Manila University.
