The Resilience Beat: Reporting on Climate, Population, and Health

From megacities to small coastal communities, more people than ever before are confronting the challenges of climate and other environmental changes. And more than ever before, we rely on the media to raise the awareness of policymakers and the public in order to increase our resilience in the face of these challenges.

But reporting on resilience requires pushing the boundaries of traditional beats, looking beyond national borders and exploring new angles such as human rights, population dynamics, disaster preparedness, and women’s health.

Join us at the Wilson Center Environmental Change and Security Program's event titled "The Resilience Beat: Reporting on Climate, Population, and Health" on Wednesday, December 3.

Best-selling author Alan Weisman will give a keynote presentation offering lessons from his experience researching and promoting his landmark book, "Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth?" for which he spoke to experts in 21 countries about the challenges a growing population poses to a sustainable future and finds a simple solution in empowering women through education and family planning.

Following his presentation, a roundtable panel of reporters and academic specialists will discuss their stories where climate change meets resilience, population, and health.

In addition to Weisman, a senior producer at Homelands Productions, speakers include Pulitzer Center Senior Producer Steve Sapienza, Jina Moore (Buzzfeed International Women's Rights Correspondent, International Reporting Project fellow and a former Pulitzer Center grantee), Ed Maibach (Director of the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University), and Lisa Palmer (Freelance Reporter; Wilson Center Public Policy Scholar).

The program will be moderated by Meaghan Parker, a Senior Writer/Editor at the Wilson Center.
