Rob Tinworth Brings 'The Life Equation' to Milken Institute School of Public Health

Big Data is coming to global health. But who should decide who lives and dies: Doctors on the front lines or a mathematical formula? In this photo, three women take a break from the waiting room at Bayalpata, a remote hospital in northwestern Nepal. Image by Rob Tinworth, 2013, Nepal.

Monday, March 28, 2016 - 12:30pm to 02:30pm EDT (GMT -0400)

Filmmaker and Pulitzer Center grantee Rob Tinworth examines global health and Big Data when he visits Campus Consortium partner George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health on Monday, March 28, 2016.

Tinworth incorporates into his presentation an interactive feature: live polling of the audience allowing participants to vote on what they believe should be done with specific funds. They can adjust their judgment calls after viewing the full presentation. The interactive feature is similar to the film footage from the special report for the PBS NewsHour created by Tinworth and Miles O'Brien that looks at the calculus that could help determine the most productive ways to spend health care dollars. Release of the full-length documentary, "The Life Equation," is forthcoming.

While at George Washington University, Tinworth also will consider the relationship between the media and health sources, covering the topics of trust, access and other possibilities for collaboration within the two professions.

Tinworth has a broad experience in independent film and broadcast television, including documentaries for Nova and Frontline. In 2012 he traveled through Sichuan documenting life in China’s leprosy villages. That travel inspired The Life Equation and he has been following this story for almost three years. Tinworth is a five-time Emmy nominee, winning in 2014 for "Nova: Manhunt Boston Bombers." Other awards include two Best Documentary honors at the Asian Television Awards and two Cine Golden Eagles.

Open to public and light lunch served. Reservation requested.
