Pulitzer Center grantee Robin Shulman visits Campus Consortium partner South Dakota State University on Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25, 2016, to share her stories of families in Canada sponsoring Syrian refugees and explain the immigration policy that makes it possible. Her main lecture on Monday evening illuminates the day-to-day challenges and triumphs of Syrian refugees who are taken in by Canadian families.
As part of the two-day visit to South Dakota State University, she also will be speaking to students in newspaper and magazine writing courses as well as communications courses focusing on mass media in society, first year experience, and food, people and the environment.
In addition, Shulman will be signing copies of her 2012 book, Eat the City: A Tale of the Fishers, Foragers, Butchers, Farmers, Poultry Minders, Sugar Refiners, Cane Cutters, Beekeepers, Winemakers, and Brewers Who Built New York.
Shulman has reported on immigration, education, food, the environment, poverty, urban policy, and other issues in U.S. cities, the Middle East, and other parts of the world. She is most drawn to stories about the resourceful ways people solve and transcend problems.
