Fragile Nations and the Minnesota Connection

Cattle camp of Bir-Diak of the Pakam clan of the Dinka tribe, Rumbek North country, Lakes State. During the civil war cattle keepers were forced to carry the weapons and ammunition for the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). Since the peace agreement of 2005, it has been easy to obtain weapons left over from Sudan’s civil war. Image by Cédric Gerbehaye. South Sudan, 2012.

More than 50 nations are in a state of fragility or conflict today. From Haiti to Somalia, these countries suffer from weak infrastructure, internal conflict and economic despair, often severely impacting the security and well-being of their local populations—with global consequences. Throughout the world, efforts are being made to stabilize these nations. Does peace finally have a chance?

Join the Pulitzer Center and Saint Mary's University of Minnesota for an in-depth look at these fragile nations, the peacebuilding efforts to stabilize them and a panel discussion on the local impact for Minnesota communities. Jina Moore, a Pulitzer Center grantee journalist who specializes in post-conflict and human rights reporting, is the special guest at the two evening panels moderated by Fred de Sam Lazaro, director of the Under-Told Stories Project at Saint Mary’s University and a Pulitzer Center grantee as well.
