Slow Journalism: A Storytelling Renaissance for the Digital Age

Striding toward Bethlehem, in the West Bank, Salopek is detoured by a herder’s tattered fence, one of the first human-made barriers—other than checkpoints and border gates—he’s faced in some 2,300 miles since he started out in Ethiopia. Image by John Stanmeyer/National Geographic.

Don Belt speaks at San Diego State University on Monday, March 6, 2017, on "slow" journalism in the digital age and Paul Salopek's  Out of Eden Walk project, which traces the path of ancient human migration across the world.

Belt is a long-time foreign correspondent and editor for National Geographic and teaches at the University of Richmond. In partnership with the Pulitzer Center, Belt also facilitates educator workshops about Salopek's project and the "slow journalism" curriculum he developed in connection with it. He led such a workshop at San Diego State University on Sunday, March 5, with assistance from Pulitzer Center Education Outreach Coordinator Lauren Shepherd.
