Slow Storytelling in the Digital Age: Workshop for Educators

In eastern Turkey, Paul Salopek leads his mule past the Karakuş royal tomb, built in the first century B.C. by one of the area’s many ruling states. When Syrians began to pour over the border 70 miles to the south, he and photographer John Stanmeyer drove down separately to report on the situation. Image by by John Stanmeyer/National Geographic.

Join Don Belt at the San Diego State University, on Sunday, March 5, 2017, for a workshop on the "slow journalism" curriculum he developed in connection with Paul Salopek's "Out of Eden Walk" project. Pulitzer Center Education Outreach Coordinator Lauren Shepherd facilitates the workshop with Belt, a long-time foreign correspondent and editor for National Geographic now teaching at the University of Richmond.

Salopek is on a 21,000 mile walk across the globe, tracing the path of ancient human migration from Africa and ultimately to the most southern reaches of South America.  As reported in the New York TimesThe New Yorker, and on NPR, the record Salopek is creating as he walks goes beyond journalism to something deeper and more lasting–a closely observed, thoroughly documented, systematic, multimedia record of our species in the 21st century.

In partnership with the Pulitzer Center, Belt has led educator workshops on "slow journalism" including at at Syracuse University,  Northwestern University and the Pulitzer Center in Washington, D.C., bringing together faculty from across disciplines, from Campus Consortium partner institutions as well as other universities. He also led a more hands-on workshop for faculty, students and journalists during the 2016 Society of Professional Journalist annual conference.

Workshop registration is free but seats are limited.
